In a winter outage the goal is simple: keep heat on your body and in one small room, and never use anything that produces carbon monoxide indoors. Battery power helps, but only with the right loads.
๐ฅ First: Carbon Monoxide Rules
The CDC is clear:
- Never use a generator inside your home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Run it more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
- Never use a gas stove, oven, charcoal grill or portable camp stove to heat your home.
- Install battery-powered CO alarms near every sleeping area.
- Symptoms include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and confusion. Sleeping people can die before symptoms appear.
๐งฅ Keep Warm Without Power
- Layer clothing, including hats and socks.
- Close off one room and live in it. Hang blankets over doors and windows.
- Use sleeping bags and blankets. Several layers beat one thick one.
- Stay dry and keep moving gently. Eat and drink regularly.
- Keep the garage and unused rooms closed to hold heat in.
๐ Where a Power Station Helps
| Load | EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus | Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 | Bluetti Elite 200 V2 | EcoFlow DELTA Pro | Bluetti EB3A |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric blanket, 200W | 4.4 h | 4.5 h | 8.8 h | 15.3 h | 1.1 h |
| Electric blanket, 100W | 8.7 h | 9.1 h | 17.6 h | 30.6 h | 2.3 h |
| Router + modem + phones, 30W | 29.0 h | 30.3 h | 2.4 days | 4.2 days | 7.6 h |
An electric blanket is the best use of battery power for warmth. A space heater is not: a 1,500W heater empties a 1,000Wh class battery in under an hour. See can a power station run a space heater. If you have a gas furnace, its blower may be run on battery power safely under the right setup; read our furnace blower guide.
Quick picks
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus (1,024Wh): about 9 hours of an electric blanket at 100W. Check the current listing on EcoFlow's site.
Bluetti Elite 200 V2 (2,073.6Wh, 2,600W): longest runtime of the three in this guide. Check Bluetti Elite 200 V2 Price
Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 (1,070Wh, 1,500W, 3,000W surge): lighter and cheaper. Check Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 Price
๐งฐ Pack These Before Winter
Flashlights, spare batteries, extra blankets, water, a first aid kit and a battery-powered radio. The 72-hour outage guide lists everything.
A first aid kit belongs next to your backup power. SurviveX kits are designed in Falls Church, VA, reviewed in-house by a former EMT/firefighter, qualify for FSA/HSA spending, carry a lifetime warranty, and ship free over $50 (per survive-x.com). See SurviveX First Aid Kits
