A gas furnace makes heat with gas, but it needs electricity to run the blower fan and the controls. In a winter outage the furnace usually will not run at all, which is why people ask whether a power station can run it. The answer depends on the blower motor type: about 60-300W for efficient ECM motors, and 450-900W for older PSC motors.

How the numbers work: wattages are typical ranges from manufacturer spec sheets and efficiency labels, so check the label on your own appliance. Runtimes are calculated, not lab-tested: usable energy = rated Wh × 0.85, divided by average watts.

⚡ Blower Motor Watts by Type

The blower uses more than 90% of a furnace’s electricity. Typical ranges (for a furnace around 80,000 BTU, fan set to normal operation):

Blower motor typeTypical running watts
PSC single-speed500-900W
PSC multi-speed450-800W
ECM, single-stage furnace250-300W
ECM, two-stage or modulating90-200W (can reach 600W+)
ECM at its lowest speedas low as 60W

The only certain way to know your furnace is to read the rating plate or measure it with a plug-in watt meter. Igniter and surge figures are not covered by these ranges, so check the manufacturer’s documentation.

Quick picks

EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus (1,024Wh, 1,800W): runs an efficient ECM blower overnight. Check the current listing on EcoFlow's site.

Bluetti Elite 200 V2 (2,073.6Wh, 2,600W): longest runtime of the three in this guide. Check Bluetti Elite 200 V2 Price

Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 (1,070Wh, 1,500W, 3,000W surge): lighter and cheaper. Check Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 Price

📊 Calculated Hours of Heat

A furnace does not run constantly. Assuming it runs about half the time on a cold night (a 50% duty cycle):

Furnace typeEcoFlow DELTA 3 PlusJackery Explorer 1000 V2Bluetti Elite 200 V2EcoFlow DELTA ProBluetti EB3A
Efficient ECM blower, 250W while running (about 125W average)7.0 h7.3 h14.1 h24.5 h1.8 h
Older PSC blower, 700W while running (about 350W average)2.5 h2.6 h5.0 h8.7 h0.7 h

What this means: an efficient ECM furnace can be kept going for roughly a night on a 1,000Wh class unit and longer on a 2,000Wh class unit. An older PSC furnace drains the same battery in about 2.5 hours. Real duty cycles depend on outdoor temperature and your home’s insulation.

⚠️ Safety First

  • Plug-in or hardwired? Most furnaces are hardwired. Connecting a hardwired furnace to a power station needs a licensed electrician and an approved transfer arrangement. Never backfeed your panel through an outlet.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local code. If you are unsure, call a licensed HVAC technician.
  • Carbon monoxide: the CDC says never run a generator inside your home or garage, and to place any fuel-burning generator more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents. Install battery-powered CO alarms near sleeping areas. A battery power station produces no exhaust, but your gas furnace and any other fuel-burning heater still do.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does a gas furnace need electricity?

Yes. The gas makes the heat, but the blower fan, igniter and control board need electricity, so most gas furnaces will not run during a power outage.

How many watts does a furnace blower use?

Roughly 60-300W for efficient ECM motors and 450-900W for older PSC motors, according to HVAC reference ranges. Check your furnace’s rating plate or measure it with a watt meter.

Can a portable power station run a furnace?

Often yes for the blower itself, if it is wired or plugged in safely and the unit’s output and surge rating are high enough. Hardwired furnaces need a licensed electrician; do not backfeed your panel.

How long will a power station run a furnace?

Assuming about half-time operation, a 250W ECM blower averages roughly 125W, so a 1,000Wh class unit gives roughly 7 hours. A 700W PSC blower averages about 350W and gives roughly 2.5 hours.

Is it safe to run a furnace on a generator?

Only if installed and connected according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local code. Never run a fuel-burning generator indoors or in a garage, and keep it more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
