Before I get to the recommendations, I need to explain why most solar generator reviews are useless for chest freezer owners.

Every chest freezer compressor has two power numbers. Running watts - what the freezer draws while maintaining temperature - and startup surge watts - the burst of power needed for half a second when the compressor kicks on.

The surge can be 8-12 times the running watts. My 7.2 cubic foot freezer draws 95W running but demands 996W at startup. If your generator cannot deliver that 996W surge, it trips. In a real blackout at 2AM, you do not know this happened until morning when everything is warm.

The number you need is the LRA - Locked Rotor Amps - on the silver data plate on the back of your freezer. Multiply it by 120 to get your surge watts requirement.
